CWBSA presents at SVRI Forum 2024: Strengthening Parenting Programmes to Reduce Family Violence

In November 2024, Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA) participated in the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) Forum in Cape Town – the world’s leading conference dedicated to research and innovation in preventing violence against women and children.

CWBSA’s Head of Content Solutions, Anna Booij, co-presented alongside Natalie Davidson from the University of Cape Town, sharing insights from ongoing research on how positive parenting interventions can reduce intimate partner violence (IPV) and promote positive relationships between men, women, boys, and girls within families. The presentation explored an adaptation of the PLH Teens programme – including engaging both caregivers and adolescents, integrating father-inclusive activities, and training facilitators to handle sensitive discussions and disclosures of abuse.

Findings from the pilot study in Mutare District, Zimbabwe, showed promising outcomes: reduced IPV, improved co-parenting, lower parenting stress, and more equitable gender attitudes. Participants reported stronger family relationships and shifts in perceptions of gender roles, reinforcing the value of participatory, community-based facilitation.

This work underscores CWBSA’s continued commitment to supporting safe, nurturing, and equitable family environments through collaborative research and programme adaptation as part of the Global Parenting Initiative.
