We spent 3 weeks in Mozambique performing and facilitating workshops for children, animators, and community members with CWB UK and Companhia De Artes Makwerhu. Our partners, PLAN International and AJOGA showed us around Buzi District where we met with children, parents and caregivers in 9 child-friendly spaces. This was one of the worst struck areas after Cyclones Idai and Kenneth hit Southern Africa in April 2019. We only touched the tip of the iceberg meeting with communities living in ramshackle tents, awaiting the next rains and potential destruction with children often sitting inside with limited stimulation. Early marriage rates are high with girls being removed from school to marry at a very young age. There are also a number of cases of sexual and gender based violence, with the team finding many women withdrawing from society. We hope to be able to return in 2020 and continue working with communities in often neglected and remote areas.
